Feeling Sensitive? Causes and Solutions

There are a lot of reasons your teeth might be sensitive, but the fact is that there is one thing going on: Your inner tooth is being exposed to the outer world—and this can sometimes cause sensitivity or pain.

Our teeth are mostly made up of dentin surrounded by a protective layer of enamel. When that enamel is compromised for whatever reason, hypersensitive dentin makes itself known.

Let’s take a look at some of the specific causes—and solutions—for sensitive teeth.

The truth is that almost anything can cause sensitivity because our teeth are sensitive to the environment. Anything from too much pressure while brushing, to acidic foods, to teeth grinding can be the culprit of our sensitive teeth. As with all things dentistry related: The best solution for tooth sensitivity is preventing it in the first place.

Tooth Sensitivity: Prevention

Here are ways to keep your teeth from becoming overly sensitive:

  • Avoid brushing too hard with a hard-bristled toothbrush. This can cause abrasion and scrape away your tooth enamel.
  • Avoid acidic foods such as oranges. And stay away from acidic mouthwash; it too can make your teeth unhappy.
  • Avoid hard-impact foods such as hard candies, and don’t chew on ice. These can cause tiny cracks in your teeth which expose nerve endings in the pulp of the tooth.
  • Avoid too much sugar consumption. Sugar softens the tooth enamel, leaving the dentin below vulnerable to sensitivity.
  • Keep gums healthy. Gum recession can happen as a result of periodontal disease, exposing sensitive tooth roots.
  • Visit your dentist regularly—and ask questions about why you might be having tooth sensitivity. Your dentist can offer solutions specific to your situation.

Tooth Sensitivity: The Solutions

  • Use a desensitizing toothpaste. These are sold over-the-counter and contain material that will fill in exposed areas of the dentin.
  • Replace your toothbrush every four months—and always use one with very soft bristles. Brush gently!
  • If you are a teeth grinder, ask your dentist about a mouthguard to use while you are sleeping.
