What is a root canal?

A root canal is a treatment to repair and save a badly damaged or infected tooth. When you have tooth decay that goes untreated, it can reach the inner area of your tooth. This area contains your nerves and other tissue, and once decay reaches it, it can become painful. Many people think that root canal treatments are painful, but they actually relieve the pain that is being caused by the tooth decay!

The procedure involves removing the damaged nerve of the tooth, cleaning and disinfecting it, and then filling and sealing it. In some cases a crown is needed for the tooth. Once a crown is placed, patients typically don't have any further pain or decay on the tooth. The most common causes for the need for a root canal treatment are a cracked tooth, a deep cavity, repeated dental treatment to the tooth, or trauma.
